Biberach an der Riß

The former Free Imperial City, Biberach and der Riss, is located in upper Swabia about 40km south of Ulm. It is also a county seat and is located along the historic Southern Railway linking Ulm and Frierichshafen on Lake Constance.

Biberach’s crown jewel is its marketplace, surrounded by fine half-timbered buildings and residences. There’s also a beautiful fountain, two painstakingly restored city halls and the gothic tower of Saint Martin’s Church. Fans of medieval architecture will marvel at the White Tower and the Gigel Tower that rise above the former Weaver’s District.  Biberach is an important stopover along the Upper Swabian Baroque Road, the historic Mill Route and the Poets Route.

Since the Middle Ages, Biberach has been an important milestone on the St. Jakob’s Pilgrimage Trail. The southern section of trail winds from Nuremberg past Ulm to Constance and on to Santiago de Compostela. For art lovers, the Braith-Mali-Museum highlights the works of renowned artists Anton Braith and Christian Mali, famed for their animal portraits.  The museum also boasts a collection of works by expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
